To become a notary in New Mexico, you must:

1- Be at least eighteen years of age.

2- Be a resident of or have a place of employment in the state of New Mexico.

3- Be able to read and write the English language.

4- Not have been convicted of a felony or crime involving fraud, dishonesty, or deceit in the last five years.

5- Not have had a notary public commission denied, suspended, or revoked in another state.

6- Not be disqualified to receive a commission under Section 22 of the Revised Uniform Law on Notarial Acts [14-14A-22 NMSA 1978].
How to Apply for a New Mexico Notary Commission
If you would like to become a notary public in New Mexico, first make sure you meet the eligibility requirements listed above, then complete the following six steps:
Step 1- Order a four-year, $10,000 New Mexico notary bond.
New Mexico requires all notary applicants to provide proof of a four-year, $10,000 notary bond. Step 2- Take the oath of office.
Print the oath of office from the New Mexico Secretary of State’s website and sign it in the presence of a notary public. You will need to scan your notarized oath of office and save it as a PDF file. You will be asked to upload it during the application process.
Step 3- Take the notary course and pass the exam.
Take the New Mexico required training course and score an 80% or better on the notary exam. Once you pass the exam, you will receive an exam certificate. Save a PDF file of your exam certificate so you can upload it during the application process.
Step 4- Complete the online notary application.
Create an account on the New Mexico Secretary of State’s online portal to complete a notary application. You will be asked to upload the notarized notary bond, oath of office, and exam certificate and to pay the $30 application fee. When approved the secretary of state will issue your commission certificate.
Step 5- Purchase a New Mexico notary stamp.

Step 6- Register your notary stamp with the state.
Within forty-five days of receiving your notary application approval, you have to register your notary stamp with the New Mexico Secretary of State. Failure to register your stamp impression will result in the cancellation of your notary commission.
